scene 4/ religion

Santa Paula Convent of the Hieronymite Order, Mexico City

music: Catholic chants

The small chapel in the monastery where the nuns pray together. Incense burns, fills the space. The NUNS are in a row, kneeling on a pew, JUANA on the end. The nun furthest upstage finishes the prayers she was whispering, eyes closed and head bent toward hands that touch lightly at the fingertips and palms. She does the sign of the cross: right hand lifts from prayer position to touch fingers to forehead, then the center of her chest, left shoulder, right shoulder, and back to center prayer position. As she does this she says the ‘holy trinity’.

NUN 1
In nomine patri,
Et fili,
Et spiritu sancti.
Amen.

When she is finished she stands and exits. Then the next one in the row does the same: the sign of the cross and the Latin.

NUN 2
In nomine patri,
Et fili,
Et spiritu sancti.
Amen.

When she is finished she stands and exits. Then the next one in the row does the same.

NUN 3
In nomine patri,
Et fili,
Et spiritu sancti.
Amen.

When she is finished she stands and exits. The next one in the row does the same.

NUN 4
In nomine patri,
Et fili,
Et spiritu sancti.
Amen.

She stands and exits. Only JUANA is on stage. She waits a small beat, long enough to make sure the nuns are gone, but not so long as to interrupt the rhythm of the prayers. She crosses herself, says her amen.

JUANA
In nomine verbis,
Et feminae,
Et spritu sancti.
Amen.

PURPOSE is heard but not seen.

PURPOSE
In the name of words; and women; and the holy spirit. Amen.

JUANA kisses her prayerful hands, sneaks a quick smile. She stands and exits, and re-enters in her nightgown, gets into bed and closes her eyes.

ACT I
WOODS

Center stage there is an urn on a slim pedestal. Around the urn on the pedestal are tea light candles, unlit. In a circle around the pedestal, on the floor, are candles of all sorts: fat ones in jars, long ones in candlestick holders, plates of tea lights; they line the perimeter of the stage and they line the aisles, unlit. The theatre is filled with incense for the entire length of this production.

GODDESS enters holding a single candle and stands left of center, speaks:

We all gather here today to celebrate the life, and death, of _______ . To celebrate, of course, first we must mourn. And so,

GODDESS crosses to center and lights the candle of the first singer in CHOIR 1, who then starts ‘Woods’ by Bon Iver. On the second verse, the first singer lights the next person’s candle by holding their own out, upright, while the next person angles their candle just so in order to light it, when the second person comes in to sing. They carry on lighting each other’s candles this way until everyone in the CHOIR is holding lit candles while singing.

When the song is finished, GODDESS goes up to the first person in CONGREGATION(audience) and lights their candle, and so begins:

ACTOR A: We had met that day

The best friend of a best friend;

And couldn’t find any space.

How it happened I can’t recall

But, somehow, they became my wall.

#2. ACTOR C laying on her back; ACTOR D is kissing the inside of her knee and cupping her hip bone.

ACTOR C: I didn’t go down.

ACTOR D: Not yet,

ACTOR C: She said.

I wanted to taste her

Gently, gratefully, instead

I kissed her softness

And caressed her hardness.

It was the smoothest its ever been.

LIGHTS UP

(TAREN and ALLIUM enter wearing spring-y evening jackets. ALLIUM goes into house, comes out with a blanket, TAREN undoes leash; they snuggle together on the loveseat)

TAREN: (Looks around. Finds a chocolate on the coffee table)

Can I eat this chocolate?

ALLIUM: Yeah!

TAREN: Score. (Eats chocolate, ALLIUM pets PENNY) That was so fucking weird.

ALLIUM: The chocolate?

TAREN: No, the art show.

ALLIUM: (Laughs) Yeah...It was kinda cool, though.

TAREN: (Gives her a look) She was doing the dishes.

ALLIUM: It was performance art.

TAREN: She was doing the dishes.

ALLIUM: The dishes were pretty...

TAREN: (Shaking head) She was doing the dishes...And we paid money to see it.

ALLIUM: Support local artists!
